Plans for Fall 2007

Oxford's Safe Routes to Schools program will encourage students and parents at three schools to get a little exercise and cut down on motor vehicle traffic before and after school. We hope to use days near the start of the school year to demonstrate that walking is a safe, healthy and enjoyable way to start the school day. The program will kickoff with Walking Wednesdays in September and a big celebration with prizes for participation by class on International Walk to School day on Oct. 3.

Mississippi is in the news once again as the most obese state in the nation. Oxford Streets once again, are crowded with vehicles hauling students young and old. We hope you can join us on a stroll back in time, to when families walked together and neighbors talked face to face instead of on their cell phones. We hope that this back to school activity will bring people together to discuss walking from home where possible and to help us identify the most needed improvements to sidewalks and crosswalks for the construction phase that will begin later this fall.

Time line

Aug 30 - SRTS parent surveys
Surveys of transportation to and from school go home to parents.
Sep 4-7 - SRTS in-class transportation tallies
Teachers will tally students transportation choices by show of hands each day.
Sep 4 - SRTS Volunteers meeting 7pm at Oxford Middle School
An organizational meeting will be held to inform and train volunteers.
Sep 20 - Announce the program to the public
Distribute Fliers to all students announcing the program
Sep 26 - Walking Wednesday
Parents and volunteers will lead groups ("walking schoolbuses") safely across intersections to their schools.
Oct 03 - International Walk to School Day
Parents, grandparents, students and Ole Miss athletes, will gather between 7 and 7:30 am in public places within 0.2 to 0.5 miles from school(see below)
Refreshments and give-aways will be available.

On the last Wednesday in September we will begin to walk from one site to each school. Depending on the interest, we may expand the program to alternative sites on International Walk to School Day Wednesday, October 3. Parents and students will gather at a remote location (primary and alternative sites are noted below) and walk to school in small groups (5-10 students). Groups of students will be accompanied by parents, teachers and community volunteers. The adult guides - "walking school bus - drivers" could be parent or grandparent volunteers, Ole Miss student athletes, teachers or community volunteers.
